A former St. Mary Marauder is getting some attention at the national level for collegiate wrestling.

Kalin Langford, currently a second year student at the University of Saskatchewan, competed at nationals in Calgary last weekend for the Huskies and finished seventh. He qualified for nationals after finishing second at the CanWest games two weeks ago in Abbottsford, B.C. The previous year he finished third at the competition. Langford told paNOW he had set some big goals for himself this year.

“Just being able to stay focused and I took weight training a lot more seriously this year,” he said.

At the nationals event in Calgary, Langford found himself in the tougher of the two pools, but held his own against more experienced wrestlers from across the country. Moving forward, Langford, who is dealing with an ankle injury is considering taking a break from competition to focus on healing and training.

“I just want to keep improving as a wrestler and keep improving myself. If I don’t medal I won’t be angry,” he said.

Lanford said the silver medal he won at the CanWest games was even more special, considering it happened on his 20th birthday.
