Melfort’s historic post office windows replaced

The facelift is complete for one of Melfort’s iconic buildings.

The replica windows at the historic post office have been installed, and all that is left in the project is some cleanup on the interior of the building.

The contractor began work on the window replacements in January.

Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz said the new windows have already made a major difference.

“The building is much more airtight, and we’ve already noticed that the furnaces are cutting in less [frequently],” said Lutz. “Comfort in the building has been improved, and surprisingly the building is much brighter and lighter in there. There [were] a few windows that had been broken that were required to be covered up, and when we replaced all of the windows in there the building is very bright, and looking very good.”

Lutz said the goal of the replacement was to keep the historic look of the building, which was constructed over 100 years ago.

The city received some of the funding for the project from the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation, and Lutz said one of their priorities was that the building should maintain its original appearance.

Lutz said they’re still accepting donations for the project.

“The project came in a little above what the estimated budget was, and it was decided it would be wise to complete the whole project and not leave it half-finished,” Lutz explained. “We’ve completed all the work and we still need some funds to match all of the grants that we received for that, so we’re still receiving donations from the public.”

For a donation of $100, you can have your name put on a postal box in the building, with the money raised going toward the window replacement project.

Lutz said they are still looking to raise about $40,000.

The former post office is also currently available for rent for private wedding ceremonies and photo shoots, and city-sponsored events.

Play Melfort and the Melfort Business Revitalization Committee are hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Party in the building March 16.

Tickets are $50, and are available at George Home Hardware and Northern Lights Gallery.
