Seniors Advocacy Centre, City of P.A. recognize local councillor

A well-known local politician has been recognized with two awards for his work, both in the local community and on the provincial scene.

Ward 4 City Councillor Don Cody received the City of Prince Albert’s Merit Award at an event Thursday afternoon. Cody, a long-time politician, was also recognized by the Prince Albert Seniors Advocacy Centre with a 70+ and Still Going Strong Award.

Cody was not in the loop on either award and was surprised to open the winner’s envelope Thursday afternoon when asked to announce the recipient. The 82-year-old councillor was the guest speaker at the event, speaking on the importance of staying active in later years.

“What a surprise,” Cody said following the presentation. “I didn’t know anything about the plaque or the honour that they’ve bestowed upon me, which is just great.”

Cody spoke Thursday about the benefits of staying active, saying people feel more connected and less isolated when they participate in the community. Cody still works and volunteers in the community, and challenged attendees at the event to spend time with the seniors around them.

A former MLA and mayor of Prince Albert as well, Cody said he’s still having fun and enjoys keeping busy,

“I’ll probably never quit enjoying politics; it’s a thing that’s in your blood, as they say,” Cody added. “I’m not quite done yet.”

Dr. John Fryters with the seniors centre said it’s important to recognize seniors who are active in the community.

“I believe if we see someone that excels in an area, I think we need to recognize them, and we better recognize them before they pass on,” Fryters said.

Mayor Greg Dionne also spoke at the event, saying Cody is one of his mentors adding that he is “the best-dressed politician in Saskatchewan.”
