Many students in the northeast received some help with their post-secondary education on Thursday, March 7.

Cumberland College held their annual Awards Ceremony at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort. Interim President Lynn Verklan said they gave out nearly $90,000 worth of scholarships.

“We awarded 78 scholarships [on Thursday],” Verklan told northeastNOW. “Sixty-six students received that money, so some students got more than one scholarship, and the total value that was given out was $89,600. That’s a combination of money from donors, as well as matching grants from the Ministry of Education.”

Verklan said the scholarships go to a wide variety of students.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to help support for a variety of purposes,” she said. “Some of it is based on service, some of it is based on marks, some of it is based on financial needs. So it’s just wonderful for the college to be able to provide the funds to help our students move forward, and pay for some of their education while they’re receiving training close to home.”

She added Cumberland College has a wide variety of donors that help out with these scholarships to help out a wide variety of students.

“The scholarships are all evaluated,” Verklan said. “All of the donors kind of identify where they want their want their scholarship to go, what area they want it to go to, so we have a variety of entrance scholarships for students coming to the college for the first time. We have a lot of scholarships that are specific to certain program areas, or students, or there might be a few scholarships that are specific to a location based on who the donor is.”

Verklan said the amount of scholarships they can give out is always changing.

“It changes every year,” she said. “We will receive our budget from the provincial government on March 20, and we will know what we get for matching money. The last couple of years for matching funds, we’ve had about $46,00, and we had some carry forward prior to that, but we have used all that up now. So we were able to use all of our matching funds this year which is quite exciting.”

She added that somewhere between $90,000 and $120,000 is normally what they are able to award for scholarships.
