History has been made after Grade 11 student Timber McKay earned Churchill Community High School its first Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) medal in wrestling.

“He was pretty ecstatic and proud of himself,” Coach Heidi Soares said. “He fought really hard. He had some tough matches, but he was determined and he left it all on the mat.”

McKay earned a silver medal during the SHSAA Provincial Wrestling Championships held in Regina during the weekend. Soares noted the school brought six athletes to compete in provincials, adding it was Churchill largest contingent of wrestlers to such an event. In total, McKay participated in five matches and won four in a row until he lost the gold medal match against a competitor from Yorkton.

With McKay’s win and good performances by teammates Kaleb Ganes and Hayden Penney, the club earned enough points that Churchill will also receive a banner to hang in the school.

“It shows the dedication and the commitment from all of the team members on everything they have put in this year,” Soares said. “It’s a big win for us.”

McKay, who has been involved with wrestling for three years, stated he was the underdog at championships but worked hard to earn his medal. He said the opponent he lost against was more experienced and had better cardio endurance than him, but said he also learned a lot during the match. Overall, McKay is proud of the whole wrestling squad.

“It feels really good getting Churchill noticed,” he said. “We went out there and worked our butts off and came out with a banner.”

The wrestling club has two tournaments remaining this year including the Saskatchewan Amateur Wrestling Association’s club provincials, as well as nationals to be held in New Brunswick.
