Melfort residents encouraged not to feed wild animals

While the nobleness is noticed, the City of Melfort is asking residents not feed deer or any wild animals with bait stations.

The Melfort Fire Department said there have already been multiple deer hit within the Melfort municipal boundary, especially on Saskatchewan Avenue, and other close calls as animals that are attracted to bait stations make their way through the city.

Jason Everitt, Melfort’s fire chief, told northeastNOW the city wants to be proactive and eliminate the risk, rather than respond to it after it’s happened.

“We understand that they’re going to move in and out of the community on their own,” Everitt said. “There are some paths that they normally take as they’re moving through from one place to the other and things like setting up feeding stations only serve to draw them in, so we’re asking for the community’s support in ceasing that practice.”

Along with potential collisions on busier roads, Everitt mentioned that bait stations could bring predators, rodents, or other undesirable animals into the city.

Everitt said the Melfort Fire Department’s focus is within city limits, but that keeping bait stations away from highways is also good practice.
