Habitat for Humanity looking to fill vacant house

An affordable home is Nipawin has been built and open for several months; and the sellers are actively looking for a family to fill it.

Habitat for Humanity in Nipawin has a house available for families with a consistent and steady income that falls into the $30,000 to $63,000 bracket.

Jeff Hrynkiw, a board member for Habitat for Humanity in Nipawin, believes the main reason it has taken months to fill the home is because of a struggle to attract people.

“A lot of people don’t know that they qualify for Habitat for Humanity,” Hrynkiw told northeastNOW. “They don’t need a down payment, it’s a purchase. It’s not a free house but it goes off of income levels. You don’t have to be a [Nipawin] citizen, just a permanent resident of Canada for at least three years.”

Hrynkiw said the payment option is around 20 per cent of a family’s gross income and the first two years in the home is similar to rent. If the family is a good fit, Habitat for Humanity in Nipawin will find a full on mortgage through Habitat, then the house would be transferred to the family and they would be paying Habitat just like a mortgage, and then they would be the official home owner.

“After someone has lived in a Habitat for Humanity house and they’re in the mortgage stage – so they’ve been there a couple years – if they want to move communities or to a different house, they have the choice of selling the house privately and paying Habitat the remainder amount owing, or sell the house back to Habitat and we would find another family for that house,” Hrynkiw said.

Habitat for Humanity Nipawin’s goal is to build five houses in the community for lower income families. The group operates under Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert and was told once they have five houses built, they’ll have enough money to build additional houses in the community on its own.

Three houses have been built by Habitat for Humanity Nipawin: one is filled, one is vacant, and another is for sale right now on the private market.

Hrynkiw recommends any family who are looking to escape the rental market to contact Habitat for Humanity Nipawin’s director Jan Thomas at director@habitatpa.ca
