Dionne hopes province considers P.A. hospital in budget

Prince Albert Mayor Greg Dionne says he would love to hear some good news about a big-ticket want when the province announces the 2019 budget details today, but he’s not expecting much either.

Ahead of Finance Minister Donna Harpauer’s budget announcement this afternoon, Dionne said he would like to hear Prince Albert is getting a new hospital this year, but that isn’t a given. Dionne has been in Regina since Tuesday following up on meeting with officials about plans for the new hospital.

“Whether they’re going to announce the new hospital, I don’t know,” Dionne said. “I know it’s close, but you first have to get the federal commitment but I do know if the money isn’t in this spring, it’ll be next spring.”

The city has already heard that revenue sharing with the province will increase by about four per cent, which will add another $280,000 more into the operating budget.

Overall, Dionne said he would also like to see better communication between governments on various matters.

“They say they talk, OK, you may talk, but there’s got to be more exchange than just listening,” he said. “There’s got to be more consulting.”
