Fees waived, new sponsor for 2019 block parties

As the snow melts and spring arrives in the Battlefords, block party season is quickly approaching.

In 2019, Frazer’s No Frills will act as the official sponsor for the neighbourhood gatherings, bringing a $200 No Frills food voucher. City council has waived the application fee for block parties this year as well.

“Block parties are a fun way to introduce your neighbourhood to each other,” the city said in a press release. “Neighbours that know each other look out for each other, they feel a sense of community and belonging.”

The city said knowing one’s neighbour makes it easier to spot unusual activity. It also is an opportunity to share skills or resources, as perhaps your neighbour has a green thumb and can help you with your garden.

There are many locations to host a block party, according to the city, such as on a street or back alley, in someone’s backyard, a city park, the Don Ross Community Centre or Credit Union CUplex.

Adding live music, painting a street mural, planting a community garden or gathering to clean up the neighbourhood are all ways the city says you can make a block party fun, unique and memorable.

Residents can visit the city’s website for a block party planning guide, application and printable resources.
