Pair of P.A. residents set to be honoured for volunteerism

Two Prince Albert residents will soon be recognized by the province for their volunteerism.

Myrna Nagy and Teena Polle will be honoured with the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal on April 9 in Regina.

“I was in total shock when I found out. We happened to be on holidays in Mexico and I got the email and I didn’t even have an inkling anything was going on,” Nagy said.

Nagy has been involved in a number of volunteer efforts over the years ranging from both the P.A. and Waskesiu Chambers of Commerce, to the winter festival and Kinsmen Foundation.

“It started way back I think in the 60s and 70s,” she said.

Eventually, Nagy’s husband became involved with the local Kinsmen organization which she credits for giving her lots of experience and training as a Kinette. In her time with the organization, Nagy served in a variety of roles.

“It was a good life, believe me, but we worked hard,” she said.

Nagy said her involvement with such a wide range of volunteer organizations is a product of a number of factors.

“People that know me would say that I don’t know how to say no, but the truth is if I see a need, I find it easier to volunteer without being asked. I like doing this type of thing,” she said.

As for Polle, she is active with numerous groups including the Legion, the Rawlinson Centre and Victoria Hospital.

“It was an enormous honour to be nominated and then to be winning, I can hardly sleep at night,” she said.

Polle began volunteering in 2000 when she stopped working and began looking for other things to do. She originally started out at Victoria Hospital and in 2003 started helping out at the Rawlinson Centre.

Polle said she is thankful for the places that allow her to contribute through her efforts.

“I like to thank all the opportunity places that I volunteer for, because if it weren’t for them, I would not be receiving this wonderful honour,” she said.
