Nominations open for In Celebration of Women Awards Gala

After a five-year break, the Piwapan Women’s Centre has announced the In Celebration of Women Awards Gala will be held once again this May.

“We did this in 2012, 2013 and 2014, and we took a little break from it, but we’re bringing it back,” Executive Director Karen Sanderson said. “It’s celebrating the women in our communities who do volunteer work or blazed trails for other women.”

The nomination period is open until the end of April and people can be nominated in several categories including culture/heritage/environment, education, volunteer/community, health/caregiver, leadership/trailblazer, art and music/language literature, perseverance, sports, justice and activism, elders and youth. Nominees must from La Ronge, Air Ronge or a Lac La Ronge Indian Band member. Posthumous nominations will also be accepted.

In the past, Sanderson noted the gala was quite popular will many people attending the event, as well as being nominated. She added since staff have been very busy with either other programming, expansions and renovations in recent years, there wasn’t much time to host the event.

“It’s something we had done in previous years that we thought should come back, just so we can recognize all the hard work the ladies do in our community,” Sanderson stated.

In Celebration of Women Awards Gala will be held May 16 at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. Tickets are $10 each and they can be purchased at the Piwapan sub-office at 808 La Ronge Ave. Nominations can be made online here or forms can be picked up at the sub-office.
