Talking about and coming up with ideas to end racism was the focus of a community forum Thursday held at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre in La Ronge.

It was organized by the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan through funding by the federal and provincial governments. The forum was already held in North Battleford, Regina and Swift Current with one more stop scheduled in Yorkton. According to Executive Director Rhonda Rosenberg, there is still discrimination and systemic racism present in our society.

“Racism is still really active in our society, and we see it with the outright discrimination and ideas people carry, but also the systemic racism,” she said. “We see the number of Indigenous kids in care or incarceration rates. Those are really evidence we have a lot of work to do in making all of our communities places where everybody contributes to them and benefits in a more equitable way.”

The forum began with a general discussion about racism with a special guest sharing her own experiences. Attendees were then separated into smaller groups, where people were given a series of questions to talk about. After the discussions were over, everyone talked about the ideas they came up with and solutions on how to end racism.

Rosenberg stated the forum was designed for adults and it accompanied the training of facilitators, which happened earlier in the day. Those facilitators are now working with students from Churchill Community High School, Senator Myles Venne School and a special group of students from Cumberland House, who travelled to La Ronge to be involved with the high school youth leadership workshop.

“We’re trying to build partnership relationships in each community, so we’re working in an organization in each place and they can take the information,” Rosenberg said.
