AAA Stars look to the future in development camp

The Battlefords AAA Stars had a successful weekend, as 110 aspiring players hit the ice at their development camp.

The players were made up of existing veterans with the club, to players looking to earn their way on to the roster. Some hopeful players travelled from as far as B.C. and Flin Flon.

Battlefords AAA Stars Head Coach Brett Parker was pleased with the way everything ran during the three-day camp, and is excited to see how the young players develop leading in to their fall camp.

“(We) really felt good about the competition level and the intensity of the guys,” he said. “(They were) relentless competitors and team-players out there.”

After a tough 14-28-0-2 season in which the club missed out on playoff action, the focus became a lot on moving forward in to the next season. When it comes to building, it’s a lot from the ground up at the AAA Midget level, making these camps invaluable in the process.

For Parker, as much as it was important to see the product on the ice, there was also focus on finding out who these players were from a personal standpoint to see if they would fit the mold of their plan moving forward. The organization’s theme for the upcoming year is “Compete. Learn. Grow.” Parker said they were looking for relentless competitors and team-players.

He admitted that camps like these can’t necessarily be as hands-on as they’d want, but they feel as though they were able to connect with them, and drive in their organization’s outlook moving forward.

“Usually with the amount of kids like that, we don’t necessarily get those points,” he said. “We really value that and we wanted to provide that (for the players).”

Parker also said that these camps don’t go on without the hard work and help of many volunteers, and that he wanted to thank all those who helped out to make this weekend as successful as it ended up being.
