Northerners bring back medals from provincial skills competition

Northern Saskatchewan was well represented at the Skills Canada Provincial Competition held April 12 in Saskatoon.

Île-à-la-Crosse’s Rossignol High School robotics team earned silver medals, while Grade 10 student Kelli Young of La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School won a bronze for cooking. The competition attracts high school and post-secondary students from throughout the province every year to showcase the skilled trades and technologies underway in Saskatchewan.

“Our kids went, they performed and did the best they could,” Rossignol teacher Dave Dalton said. “We were just shy of the gold medal, but we’re pretty happy with the silver.”

It was the fifth time the robotics teams participated at the event and the second medal they’ve earned after also receiving a silver medal in 2018. During this year’s competition, Dalton stated students had to build a remote-controlled robot capable of picking up foam balls and shoot them into their opponent’s net. Students from Rossignol made it to the final round in the competition, but ultimately lost the top spot by only four points.

Students were busy building the robot since the beginning of the school year as Dalton noted they had to design it and do all the other work in getting it ready. He said the students did the best they could, spent a lot of time building it and worked hard all year. At the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Robot Rumble in March, the robotics club took first, second and third place.

“These competitions are all about having a lot of fun,” Dalton said. “These kids get a great experience out of it.”

Meanwhile, Young earned her spot at the Skills Canada Provincial Competition by preparing a winning entrée and dessert at a regional event last month. At the provincial competition, she cooked a three-course meal including a French carrot soup, chicken cacciatore with homemade pasta in red tomato sauce and chocolate mousse for dessert.
