Melfort Fire Chief urging residents to be prepared in case of an emergency

It’s Emergency Preparedness Week across Canada from Sunday, May 5 to Saturday, May 11, and the Melfort Fire Department is making sure everyone stays safe.

Fire Chief Jason Everitt said the week is good for them to keep citizens aware.

“What it does is it gives us an opportunity to focus on emergency preparedness,” Everitt told northeastNOW. “And make sure that our residents and citizens are aware of the importance of preparedness when it comes to protecting themselves during an emergency.”

Everitt added a typical theme every year is making sure people are prepared for 72 hours in case of an emergency.

“Have a plan, have a kit, and know the risks in our area,” he said. “In the event of a power failure or a flood, or some significant event that may result in a widespread emergency. It’s important to have that plan and that kit available.”

Everitt said as long as someone can stay self-sufficient for 72 hours, that should give enough time for crews to respond to the emergency.

The department has a detailed set up in Melfort City Hall regarding Emergency Preparedness Week that features plenty of information about what should go into an emergency kit, and other useful information.
