Nipawin reduces tax increase after budget error

Nipawin’s 2019 municipal budget was approved during the March 11 council meeting, although one key item for taxpayers has been revised.

Over a month later at the April 23 meeting, Nipawin council voted to reduce the town’s budgeted tax levy increase from three to 2.4 per cent.

The decrease is a result of the budget removing one of two $28,000 entries for visitor Information Services.

Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s chief administrative officer, called the duplicate charge an honest error.

“It was noted by our finance department that in fact, after the budget had been approved, it was found that the entry that had been incorporated for that purpose had been entered twice in two different areas,” Elliott told northeastNOW. “It was done inadvertently, so that was brought forward to council at the earliest opportunity and it was corrected.”

Elliott said while the budgeted increase was approved, the tax levy matter is still in front of council and the decision of how the tax burden is going to be shared within the community will be made in the near future.

The Town of Nipawin said it recently received numbers from the Saskatchewan Assessment Management Agency and is working on tax assessment information for residents.

Elliott said the town provided all properties with a projected tax notice earlier in the year which eluted to what they believe the tax implications may be.

The projected tax notice is largely based on the previous year.
