Nipawin reaches agreement with SHA for doctor duplex leases

A formal agreement between the Town of Nipawin and Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) regarding physician duplexes has been reached.

Nipawin council signed to a five-year lease agreement with the SHA to house physicians and other kinds of health care professionals in a building on SHA land.

Mayor Rennie Harper told northeastNOW the duplex on SHA property was a joint project made years ago, where the town owned the house, but the SHA – formally known as the health region at the time – owned the land.

“There was a lack of housing for those folks some years back,” Harper said. “The town, some partners, and the region at the time got into a partnership to build a duplex so that you would have some ongoing housing for physicians. It was situated on the SHA’s property and there was never a formal agreement struck in relation to that, despite the fact that 10 years had gone by. We were able to achieve that and I’m very happy to say that.”

The SHA will rent both sides of the duplex to health professionals, cover all annual operating costs, and provide a monthly amount for eventual capital improvements.

The Town of Nipawin will pay $1 per year during the land lease agreement.
