Six football players from Churchill Community High School are in Regina to participate in the 2019 Viterra Senior Bowl at Mosiac Stadium.

“It’s an all-start game showcasing the best Grade 12 graduating football players in the province,” Chargers Head Coach Gabe Andrews said. “There will be a number of scouts in the stands watching all three games for potentially late pick-ups for junior football programs in Western Canada or varsity football programs at any of the universities.”

There are six athletes from Churchill attending the Senior Bowl including Eric Choquette, Solomon Groves, Luke Hepworth, Justin McKerracher, Hayden Penney and Tim Zelensky. They’ll compete in the nine-aside game to be held Sunday. In previous years, Andrews noted only one other football player was invited to join the event back in 2016.

Those selected to participate at the Senior Bowl are split either into the northern or southern team depending on the school they attend. Athletes from La Ronge are part of the northern team and they’ll begin practicing at Mosiac Stadium Friday. Andrews noted everyone is looking forward to the weekend.

“It will be some of their last opportunities to practice and play in a football game in their lives,” he said. “For a lot of these guys, that’s a pretty big deal in itself. If a guy hasn’t been selected to play for post-secondary anywhere else, this is kind of their last opportunity and, if that doesn’t work out, they will have to hang up their cleats after this game.”

From June 10 to 14, the Churchill Chargers will be hosting a five-day try out for new and returning players. It will include a series of practices and a scrimmage on the final day. The 2019 football season in La Ronge will start Aug. 22 with a fall camp.
