Tisdale lawyer sworn in at Bar Admission ceremony

This week marked a pivotal point in Jessica McKee-Howes’ life.

The Tisdale local had rows of family, friends, and loved ones – including her husband and toddler son – at Melfort’s Court of Queen’s Bench for her Bar Admission ceremony on Monday, May 27.

McKee-Howes told northeastNOW she could feel the support in the courtroom while swearing her oath.

“It’s just a great feeling to have the support of your family behind you throughout law school and then finally getting to see the culmination, I think they were almost more excited for it than I was,” McKee-Howes laughed.

McKee-Howes said she set her sights on profession in law after watching the 2001 film Legally Blonde in middle school. She thought at the time ‘I could do that’, and eventually proved her past-self right.

McKee-Howes applied for her undergraduate degree at Dalhousie University in Halifax where she did Canadian Studies and political science before applying at the University of Saskatchewan for her law degree.

Being raised in Tisdale, McKee-Howes always had a desire to return to northeast Saskatchewan due to its size and friendliness.

“To come back to an area that you already know takes off a lot of pressure coming into a profession,” she said. “You don’t have to worry about reaching out and trying to pry people away from somebody else that they’ve had for so many years. It was really nice to be able to come back. Luckily, I knew of Kapoor, Selnes & Klimm from home anyway, and they happened to be at law school for a career fair.”

For Kapoor, Selnes & Klimm in Tisdale, McKee-Howes mostly does solicitor work, which includes wills, estates, some corporate commercial, and general questions of law. She also does municipal law with Kapoor, Selnes & Klimm’s office being the Town of Tisdale’s solicitor.

The next steps for McKee-Howes is to slowly branch into court work over the summer, get involved in the community, and relax a little bit after going through the Bar courses.

McKee-Howes’ parting thoughts for anyone listening was to always pursue their dream, no matter how silly it may seem.

“I think I know a handful from the area that have been to, and graduated from law school,” she said. “There’s starting to be more now, but I’d definitely encourage more people to look into that.

“I know it’s very intimidating, but stick to your guns and if you really like something, go for it and it’ll all work out in the end.”
