Grade 12 student Ashim Dhital learned how valuable dedication to hard work is after receiving a $100,000 scholarship this week.

The École St. Mary graduate is the winner of the Schulich Leader Scholarship which spreads the $100,000 over four years. The scholarship is administered by the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) and students are nominated by their school for the award.

“I was speechless, I didn’t know what to say, it was on the phone and I was just really excited,” Dhital said on learning he received the award.

The Schulich Leader Scholarship, which Dhital was awarded is part of national program and sees awards handed out to students looking to pursue an education in science, engineering and math fields. Dhital, who plans to study engineering at U of S said he was honoured to be nominated by the school. Following the nomination, he followed the remaining application process.

“I felt very honoured to be recognized, by my school and just to be recognized for the efforts and the work,” he said.

Dhital said he looks forward to start classes at the U of S in the fall. When he starts in the faculty of engineering he will be doing general classes before choosing a specialty. Currently, he is considering mechanical engineering.

“We’ll see how the first year goes and [go] from there,” he said.

Dhital was not the only student recognized at St. Mary Wednesday. The school’s students packed into the gym where a variety of awards were handed out ranging from arts to athletics.

On the athletic side, three Marauders were recognized for winning provincial championships. They included Cole Sanderson and Blake Michelle, who won for wrestling, while Seth LeMoal won for track and field.

Principal Mark Phaneuf said the student body and the staff deserve lots of credit for making the school a good environment.

“It’s a wonderful place to work, it’s a wonderful place to be,” he said.

Phaneuf acknowledged the importance of recognizing individuals for their achievements, but stressed the role of the school community in driving success.

“Not one of these awards was earned in solitary fashion,” he said.
