The 18-year-old man convicted of uttering threats toward Tisdale Middle and Secondary School (TMSS) was sentenced to 15 months of probation.

Jarad Tiedjens appeared for sentencing in Tisdale Provincial Court on Tuesday, June 4. Along with the probationary sentence, Judge Lloyd Stang handed Tiedjens a seven-year firearms suspension.

The charges stem back from an incident in Tisdale on the morning of Sept. 27 when threatening comments toward TMSS were written on social media. The school was placed in a hold and secure during the morning while police investigated.

Outside of court, Tisdale RCMP Cpl. Rob King said whether they’re made online or through social media mediums, officers take threats seriously.

“I think people have to be cautious with social media,” King said. “Because it can be so quick and fast, I don’t think people who are usually engaged in social media a great deal and say these types of things have really thought through the ramifications of what they say.”

“Any time you write something or put something out there, you really have to think about how the person who is going to read it, going to receive it. You can’t show your emotion, inflection, or tone like you can with a verbal conversation, and sometimes things can be easily taken the wrong way.”
