Residents not happy about Nordale truck re-routing

Jun 6, 2019 | 6:08 PM

Some residents in Nordale are not happy heavy trucks will be re-routed through their neighborhood starting Monday. However, the city of Prince Albert says they have little choice.

A stretch of the southern tip of Central Avenue North will be closed as it is being rebuilt. That makes the route for heavy trucks coming from the east along Highway 55 through North Industrial Park inaccessible.

During the work, heavy vehicles wanting to head south over the bridge will now need to go through Nordale by taking a right turn into Fifth Avenue NW before connecting with Highway 2.

“The city hasn’t given proper notice to people and there’s a big sign as you head into Nordale that says ‘no big trucks,’” resident Brad Dent told paNOW. “That just shows you the disregard for the people who live in Nordale; we pay the same taxes as Crescent Heights.”

Dent, who lives on Fifth Avenue NW, has many concerns and said he spoke with his neighbours who share his sentiments.

“There’s dust, there’s kids that could be run over; this is a very quiet slow-moving community,” he said. “There are kids and families on the street all the time and there have been accidents on the intersection just south of me.”

Dent wants to know why an alternative re-routing further back along Highway 55 near the Pine Grove Correctional Centre and then onto North Industrial Park wasn’t chosen.

The city of Prince Albert explained to paNOW the option of sending the heavy trucks along 15th Street NE instead wasn’t viable because it’s a sand road.

“That road doesn’t have the structural capacity to withhold the trucks that are going through, especially if it rains. The road would fail,” Surface Works Manager Marcel Gareau explained. “In that sense it would require a lot of maintenance, so the cheaper, more practical option is going through the Nordale subdivision.”

Asked about safety and dust concerns Gareau said the Nordale street had been prepared ahead of the extra loads.

“We added asphalt millings that keeps the dust down as opposed to gravel and there will be speed reduction signs to 30 km/h to accommodate a safe environment,” he said.

The rebuild of Central Avenue N. goes from June 10 through June 21, although Gareau said the work could be finished earlier depending on the weather.
