Dignitaries and stakeholders were in Aberdeen on Thursday, June 6 to celebrate the unveiling of a new group home for Farm in the Dell.

Farm in the Dell is an organization that provides support for people in the area with intellectual disabilities.

The new facility in Aberdeen will house five people in the group home portion, while two more people will be able to live in the attached, independent living suite. Co-Executive Director with Farm in the Dell, Lynette Zacharias said it was a team effort to make the project a reality.

“First of all, our board of directors, who committed to raising a substantial amount of funds for the project,” Zacharias told northeastNOW. “And then also, with the commitment of the government, the Ministry of Social Services committing to the operating budget of it”

The Government of Saskatchewan provided more than $500,000 in annual funding for the initiative.

Zacharias said this was a project that needed to be done for Farm in the Dell.

“Super important so that we could support more people in our community that are in need of residential placements,” she said. “And also to have day programming, or jobs to do during the day because that all live and work on the farm.”

Currently, Farm in the Dell has a group that houses 10 individuals on a farm near Aberdeen. Zacharias said it’s an exciting time for them as they continue to grow in the area.

“We’re just really excited to be providing more opportunities for people in a rural setting,” she said. “And just excited to see what the future holds.”

In a release, Social Services Minister Paul Merriman said it’s a great partnership to have with Farm in the Dell.

“Seven people were welcomed into their new home [on Thursday] and we are excited to celebrate with them,” Merriman said. “We are proud to partner with Farm in the Dell and support their work toward building inclusive communities.”
