Weather a major factor in weekend fundraisers

Weather played a big part in this weekend’s fundraising efforts for both the Meadow Lake Hospital Foundation and Meadow Lake Search and Rescue.

The rain stopped in the early morning and the sun was shining which was welcome news to the Hospital Foundation. The Meadow Lake Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament had 21 teams of four golfers participate and raised over $10,000 at the Meadow Lake Golf Course on June 8.

Funds raised in the tournament will go toward buying new equipment for the hospital. This year the foundation is hoping to raise a total of $139,300 which will go toward buying an ice machine and blanket warmer for the dialysis unit.

They also hope to get a cardiac monitor for the cardiac room, a wall mounted cardiac monitor for the trauma room and a cystoscope for the operating room.

Tony Vandenberg, vice-chair of the Hospital Foundation, was pleased with the turnout and said bringing in new equipment will keep patients in Meadow Lake.

“If it wasn’t here, people would have to go to Saskatoon or North Battleford [for treatment],” Vandenberg said.

Vandenberg said the foundation started the tournament earlier this year to not conflict with tournaments later in the summer.

“It did show with a better turnout than last year,” Vandenberg said. “We hope that people can book their date for next year because we’re going to have it the same weekend.”

On Sunday, intermittent rain throughout the day affected the turnout of SAR’s fundraiser. Chris Gill of SAR said they saw attendance go down compared to other years.

“The rain was on and off and [there was] a bit of hail,” Gill said. “But it still turned out pretty good.”

SAR raised under $500 by selling burgers, chips and pop at their annual teddy bear picnic on June 9. All funds went toward buying equipment like GPS devices for SAR.

Meadow Lake RCMP, the local fire department, ambulance services, trappers’ association, the conservation officer, KidsFirst and Early Childhood Services were all in attendance and helped set up games for the children and their teddy bears.

An obstacle course, ring toss and a parachute were some of the activities the groups set up for the event.

“We’re 100 per cent volunteers so we rely on our fundraising,” Gill said. “We’re always looking for something to do in fundraising.”
