Meota Golden Oldies show to highlight glory days of music history

Charles Baillargeon has a soft spot for the old tunes from the ’60s and ’70s.

He should as he grew up with them.

Hearing songs from that era rekindles fond memories for him, similar to flipping through the pictures of an old photo album, documenting the years

“Cat Stevens brings me back to my teenage years,” Baillargeon said. ‘”Cats in the Cradle’ has significance in a generational sense, somewhat like ‘Que Será, Será‘ (whatever will be, will be).”

He appreciates this period in music history, as he says that songs were “easily understood and had a clear message.”

That’s why Baillargeon is looking forward to bringing together fellow musical friends from Saskatchewan and Alberta for a concert fundraiser coming up called The Golden Oldies. A total of 14 performers will play songs from pop and country music’s heyday, and will impersonate the artists whose songs they cover, in full costume to channel the spirit of these early songsmiths.

Attendees can expect to hear the music of Elton John, Billy Joel, Don McLean, and from the classic American Song Book era Ella Fitzgerald, to name a few.

Baillargeon will be performing with his son Colin, singing their rendition of the Cat Steven’s song “Cats in the Cradle” that Baillargeon alluded to.

“I’m looking forward to that. It’s certainly going to be a little bit of an emotional song, because it portrays the way that children grow up is very similar to their fathers,” he said.

Baillargeon and his wife Anne are organizing the concert.

“There is such a desire for local performers to put on this type of a concert,” he said. “We’ve had a request to hold it many times. That’s why we decided to put our efforts into it one more time, and see if we can create something new and raise some money at the same time.”

Proceeds from the show and silent auction will benefit the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation.

Baillargeon said this will be a smaller event than a similar tribute show held in November last year, without a dinner component, but will feature many of the popular performances from before.

The show will take place Aug. 4 at the Meota Communiplex. Tickets are available at the Meota Insurance Agency.
