Flat Track Racing comes to North Battleford

Jun 17, 2019 | 3:30 PM

The North Battleford Exhibition grounds will be roaring with the sounds of motorbikes as Saskatchewan Flat Track Racing hosts their fifth-annual event this weekend.

The races will run Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, practice will begin at noon, with races following at 1 p.m. On Sunday, practice will begin at 10 a.m. with races at 11 a.m.

This will be the season opener for racers in western Canada. Pre-registration for the event is showing growing numbers of competitors year over year according to organizers.

Organizers said they are expecting as many as 50 riders and 100 bikes to compete this weekend with most riders entering multiple events with different bikes.

The event will feature numerous categories, such as dirt bikes and converted speed-bikes, for both riders to take part in, as well as an event for children. They even have a Knobby event that allows interested riders to bring their motocross bikes onto the flat track for a race against each other.

Some local Saskatchewan riders from North Battleford, Unity, and Saskatoon will be among the competitors this weekend.

For the last five years the event has been the only flat-track racing event in Saskatchewan but Kevin Jones, an event organizer, says they are helping a man with the construction of a 0.6 kilometre track in Young, Sask.

“He’s going to hold some races in August, so the sport is growing in Saskatchewan,” Jones said.

“Flat Track Canada is also coming out June 27 to host a Go Flat track school for guys who are interested in the sport and want to learn more about it. The goal is to grow the sport and have it as another option for young motorcyclists coming up.”

Organizers are expecting 500 or more people to take in the event throughout the weekend.
