Live concert series to celebrate summer in the Battlefords

Summertime in Saskatchewan is often referred to as the brief pause between passing winter months.

To celebrate the summer while it lasts, the Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) is hosting the first show of their annual summer concert series June 26 at Central Park in North Battleford.

Executive Director for Downtown BID, Misty Lavertu, said while the event has been around for a number of years, known previously as Live at Lunch, this year there has been a slight tweak to the title. There will now also be concerts held in the evening throughout the summer months as well.

“Instead of just having them at 12 p.m. for the lunch crew, we’ll be having some evening barbeques as well,” Lavertu said. “[That way] we can get the after work crew, and people can have time to run home and grab the kids, come out and not have to cook dinner. They can just enjoy the summer in the park because it goes so fast.”

The concerts in the park will feature music performed by various local musicians from the Battlefords and surrounding area. There will also be a barbeque at each of the concerts.

Lavertu said the barbeque will be run by different businesses and charities from within the community, with the local Food Bank manning the grill the opening afternoon.

“Every group that we have doing the barbeque is working for an organization, so they are out fundraising for a specific group,” she said. “It’s just nice that we can support the local charities and local businesses, so the more [who attend] the merrier; we want to fill up the park for a good cause.”

Lavertu said the lunch-hour shows, such as Wednesday’s, offer people in the community a chance to do something special and head outdoors to enjoy the sunshine – if for only an hour – even on a workday.

“If people just want to come out, bring a blanket, hang out in the park, grab a burger and listen to some music on their lunch break, they can do so,” she said. “It’s all about that feeling of community.”

Wednesday’s concert will begin at 12 p.m. Two shows will follow in each of July and August.

Upcoming concerts in the park:

June 26: 12 to 1 p.m.

July 17: 12 to 1 p.m.

July 24: 5 to 7 p.m.

Aug. 7: 12 to 1 p.m.

Aug. 21: 5 to 6 p.m.
