Pedestrian struck by car in Midtown

A 35-year-old pedestrian is recovering in hospital after being struck by a car on the corner of Sixth Avenue E. and 11th Street E. Thursday afternoon.

He was taken from the scene by Parkland Ambulance in good and stable condition.

Parkland Ambulance spokesman Lyle Karasiuk said this is the time of year when pedestrians and cyclists are out and about and everyone has to use caution.

“It’s summertime so there are lots of us are out enjoying the sunshine,” he said. “If you’re a pedestrian you need to stop at the corner, use the corner, use a designated crosswalk if one is available and look both ways.”

While not specifically referring to Thursday’s incident Karasiuk said jaywalking was an ongoing concern in both the downtown and other areas.

“The traffic is not expecting you in the middle of the block. I mean, we teach small children to stop, look and listen before crossing the street and I think that’s certainly as life lesson we can apply to adults as well.”
