For the first time ever, the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo will be in Prince Albert. From Aug. 31 to Sept. 1, the Red River Roping and Riding Arena will be host to the high school rodeo.

“For our 4R’s arena, it’s huge. We’re really happy to be chosen as the host in the province and we look forward to it,” said Larry Henry, the barn director for the RRRR arena. “We used to host professional rodeo, but we just financially can’t do it. This is another venue for us to offer the citizens of Prince Albert and area that we think is going to add to the people that love rodeo and people that are curious of what rodeo is all about.”

The high school rodeo circuit doesn’t issue prize money like the professional ranks do, but can earn post-secondary scholarships and eligibility to national and international tournaments.

The Skene boys from Prince Albert have ventured off to big events as well from the high school circuit. Kolby Skene will compete at the Calgary Stampede this summer, while Chase Skene is currently in Huron, South Dakota for National Junior High Finals Rodeo.

Kasi Henry will compete at the Canadian High School Finals July 26-28 in Merritt, B.C

Having the rodeo come to Prince Albert saves the local competitors and rodeo fans the hassle of having to log long miles of highway to another event.

“For our local kids, it’s really important and to our families. The kids get the opportunity to show their family and friends what they’re doing every weekend when they’re gone during the summer, from spring until fall,” Henry said. “Quite often, we’re travelling to rodeos that are four, five, six hours away from home. To have one in our backyard, it’s great to have family come up and cheer.”
