North Stars AGM shows team playoff run pays dividends

Coming off a league championship in 2019, the Battlefords North Stars hosted their Annual General Meeting this week, offering a reflection on the past year, as well as a look ahead to what’s to come, both in the fall and moving forward.

After leading the league in average attendance through the 2017-18 campaign, the North Stars bounced between second and third-overall in average attendance numbers through the regular season in 2018-19. The club interchanged back and forth with Humboldt for the second spot to only the Estevan Bruins.

Average attendance through the regular season was around 900 people per game through the regular season.

In the post-season, ticket sales increased to an average of more than 1,500 making their way to the Civic Centre on a given game-night. During pivotal games such as Game 7 of the Stars’ first-round series with the Flin Flon Bombers, and Game 5 of the team’s Finals series against the Melfort Mustangs, the attendance reached nearly capacity crowds.

Through the quarter-finals of the playoffs, ticket prices remained the same as the regular season, with costs increasing by $1 incrementally with each round of the playoffs.

Season ticket sales in 2019 remained consistent from the year prior. Sales are trending up for the upcoming 2019-20 season.

The team’s gross playoff revenue amounted to $117,493. However due to large facility fees, business and overall expenses, net playoff revenue was $24,438.

A spokesperson for the North Stars said the organization pays 30 to 40 per cent more in rental fees than anyone else in the league, with fees increased during the playoffs, which took a toll on playoff revenue.

Overall, revenue was down this year from $179,705 as of May 31 2018, to $161,826 as of May 31, 2019. The team’s budget does not account for playoffs.

The North Stars’ home opener will be played Sept. 14 against the Kindersley Klippers. The 2019-20 season will mark the ninth-consecutive year the North Stars and Klippers will face off on opening night.

North Stars’ head coach and General Manager Brayden Klimosko, said although the season remains still a couple months away, the players are already looking forward to getting back to business come September.

“The guys returning seem to be hungry,” he said. “They’re ready to compete in the fall for another championship, and also [for] a chance to play in Portage for the national tournament.”
