Canada Day double celebrations

We’re in for a double-dose of fun on Monday as we celebrate our home and native land.

Organized Canada Day events will be held at both Kinsmen Park for the traditional Royal Canadian Legion affair, while the Prince Albert Multicultural Council will return to the riverbank for their festivities.

“Our veterans have been doing this since the late 1960s so everyone can get together and have a really good time,” chair of the Legion events Brenda Cripps told paNOW. “We’ll have entertainment for all ages: from kids, to bingo players and cash prizes, to music on the stage.”

Cripps said there would be ball games at the diamonds starting at 10 a.m., with the opening ceremonies and march-on at 10:45 a.m. The day is expected to wrap by 6 p.m.

The P.A. Multicultural Council has decided to move its Canada Day celebrations from Kinsmen Park back to the riverbank due to popular demand.

“People have been asking us for this and we want to join the campaign of hosting activities and events along the river because there’s such a rich history,” Executive Director Michelle Hassler told paNOW. The council last held its celebrations there in 2012.

The area from the museum to the boat launch will be used with two stages set up: one for live music and another specifically for kids’ entertainment. And Hassler added the location is ideal for the late-evening finale.

“We can do bigger, better fireworks displays on the river. It’s beautiful compared to the limited space at Kinsmen Park,” she said.

Events get going at noon with the opening ceremony and there are various acts scheduled almost every hour. The PAGC will have a Reconciliation Ceremony at 6 p.m., with live music continuing to the fireworks display around 10:30 p.m.

Laws around fireworks

The Prince Albert Fire Department is reminding the public that the best, and only legal place to have fireworks, will be on the riverbank Monday evening. The city’s bylaws prohibit their use except by a properly permitted professional organization.

“That means the fireworks you buy at a local store you are not allowed to set off in the city limits of Prince Albert,” deputy chief Alex Paul said. “If you think you can go to a school ground to let them off you can’t, unless you have written permission from the landowners.”

Paul said setting off fireworks in a private yard was not allowed and the user would be liable for any fire damage that may be caused to a neighbour’s property.

“It’s just safer to go to [the Canada Day display]. It doesn’t cost you anything, and you don’t need to assume any liabilities,” he said.
