Canada Day round-up for Meadow Lake and surrounding communities

Monday is a day of celebration for Meadow Lake and the surrounding communities as the nation celebrates 152 years of Canadian history.

There is no shortage of events taking place in celebration of Canada Day on July 1.

Meadow Lake

All events will be held in Lion’s Park and the Pineridge Ford Amphitheatre starting at 4 p.m. with a scavenger hunt, dunk tank and three-legged race. The dunk tank will cost $2 for one throw, or $5 for three throws.

More activities continue with a gunny sack race at 4:30 p.m., an egg race at 5 p.m. and a chalk colouring contest for the kids at 5:30 p.m. The theme for the contest is, “what represents Canada to you?”

At 6 p.m., cake will be served for free and hot dogs and pop will also be available for $1. Speeches and live entertainment start at 6:30 p.m., and at 10 p.m., the day will end with a fireworks display.

Loon Lake

The day will start off with a pancake breakfast in the Loon Lake Rec Centre at 8 a.m. with proceeds going to the Makwa 4-H Beef Club. A farmer’s market will be set up in Ernie Studer School and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Canada Day Parade will start at 11 a.m. on Main Street with burgers and beverages to follow at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall.

Bouncy houses and face painting will be available for the kids at the Loon Lake Rec Centre from 1 to 4 p.m. and the Big Bear Museum will be serving pie and coffee at the same time.

In the early evening there will be live music on the shores of Jumbo Beach and fireworks at dusk.

Green Lake

All events will happen at the river bank starting with the pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. The float and bike parade will follow at 1:30 p.m. starting at the turnoff on Roy Ave.

A ball hockey tournament and canoe races will start depending on the number of entries and both have a $5 entry fee.

At 3 p.m. cake will be available and the Edward Kennedy Sr. Memorial Horseshoe Tournament, which has $10 entry fee, will begin.

A bouncy house, kid’s games and live entertainment will be available throughout the day with fireworks ending the celebration on the river bank at 10:30 p.m.

Greig Lake (Day Use Area) – Meadow Lake Provincial Park

The day starts at 11 a.m. with face painting and crafts for the kids. At 1 p.m. the Sask Fur Trappers will have a display and will be giving out free cake.

There will be live performances by Jim McKillop at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the day-use area and Just The Boyz will be performing at the Greig Lake Store from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Sandy Beach Campground

Sandy Beach will be celebrating on July 2 with face painting and crafts at 11 a.m. and the Sask Fur Trappers will have a display and free cake at 1 p.m.

Jim McKillop will also be performing at the campground at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
