City to offer free summer drop in playground programs

Jun 29, 2019 | 12:00 AM

As summertime hits full-swing in the Battlefords, North Battleford Leisure Services is once again offering their free drop in summer playground program.

Offered Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning July 4, the playground program operates out of four locations including the Centennial, Kinsmen, Fairview and Connaught playgrounds.

Around for decades, the program has become a staple of the summertime for children and their parents in the community.

Coordinator Jordanne Stolz said while the kids enjoy the fun in the sun, the program offers long-term benefits to the community.

“It helps keep our kids active and when we have active kids, they grow up into active adults,” she said.

As the program is free to attend, Stolz said it serves as an activity available to all, regardless of financial standing or circumstance.

“It’s a valuable program because it gives opportunities to lower income families or kids who may not get the opportunity to get out of town for the summer,” she said. “It’s a chance [for them] to get involved and be part of a program similar to camp. It lets them kind of have a place to go if they really don’t have anywhere to be during the summer, and we’re happy to be able to provide that to kids.”

At each park location will be two playground leaders organizing games, crafts, songs, water play, and stories, among other activities for children aged six to 12.

In addition to the everyday activities, the program will host special events at certain playgrounds throughout the summer that will bring all four playgrounds together. Any child can register for the special events.
