One big catch; angler pulls in pike

Spending quality time outdoors paid off for a Prince Albert man who scored a record catch while fishing at Candle Lake Friday.

Les Mewis found himself reeling in a 47-inch-long pike after spending nearly half an hour battling the aquatic monster, a struggle he told paNOW was well worth it.

“We had been fishing for three or four hours with no luck. I threw on an old spoon … I caught one small pike then maybe half an hour later I got the big bite,” said Mewis.

“I’m sure it’s not record size but it was quite a big fish. It was definitely the largest pike that I’ve ever caught so I was feeling pretty good.”

Mewis noted that pike was caught and released, and added that it’s important to release the bigger fish – almost always females, back into the ecosystem.

“Each female can lay millions of eggs, so it’s really important to release them whenever you catch them,” Mewis noted.

“She will go on to breed and keep big fish in the lake for other people to catch.”
