Nipawin Chamber and town agree on legal fees for building purchase

The Town of Nipawin and the Nipawin and District Chamber of Commerce will each cover $500 of the chamber’s legal fees as a result of their building purchase agreement.

Nipawin council voted to cover $500 of the chamber’s legal fees during its July 8 meeting. The agreement came after they received a letter from the chamber in June asking if the town could cover all of the legal costs, as the chamber is a non-profit organization and incurring more costs during its move. Council declined that option during the June 24 meeting before agreeing on the $500 payment.

Lisa Suchlandt, executive director of the Nipawin and District Chamber of Commerce, said ongoing conversations with the town have been positive.

“It’s progressing, so we’re getting closer to being able to move to our new location,” Suchlandt told northeastNOW. “We’re hoping to finalize the sale of this building that we’re currently in, so the town may continue with visitor services from this location and the chamber can make arrangements to purchase the other building and move.”

The Town of Nipawin agreed to purchase the chamber’s building for $85,000 plus a $5,000 signing bonus after it announced it would assume visitor information services from the chamber back in April 2019, which resulted in the chamber needing to relocate its office. Suchlandt said the chamber intends to purchase property on Railway Ave W in downtown Nipawin. The town expects visitor information services to relocate back to the chamber building at Central Park because of its highway accessibility and visibility.

No official sale date has been finalized but Nipawin’s Chief Administrative Officer Barry Elliott will meet with the chamber to continue discussions of the property purchase process.

“We all want this to happen as quickly as it can and that will be the intent here to expedite this as much as possible,” Elliott said. “The Town of Nipawin and council are supportive of the chamber’s work and are anxious to see them settle into their new location and continue with their ongoing efforts.”
