Carrot River beginning water main construction on Main Street

Water mains in Carrot River that are nearly 60 years old will be replaced.

Carrot River council decided to replace the water and sewer mains on Main Street. The decision came after Main Street has seen four water interruptions since November 2018 while the town in general has had 13 in total during that timeframe.

Kevin Trew, Carrot River’s town administrator, said construction will begin on Monday, July 15 and last until approximately July 25, with pavement resurfacing taking place in summer 2020.

In the meantime, businesses are expected to stay open.

“The street and areas will be closed at times for two blocks of Main Street,” Trew told northeastNOW. “We’re hoping that people will continue shopping in Carrot River and working with businesses on Main Street. We’re unsure which days different sections of Main Street will be blocked off, however, we do know this will be happening over a 10-day period.”

The town hopes to mitigate any water main breaks in future by replacing them before they happen, such as a recent example in front of Carrot River High School where the town needed to break through curbs, pavement, and sidewalks that were in good condition.

“In case of an emergency when water is coming up out of the ground and causing all sorts of disturbance, those are things you have to do what you have to do,” Trew said. “It’s not a decision that anybody needs to make, it just happens. If we can get the lines replaced and be proactive, then we can do it on our own timeline rather than the emergency timeline.”

The Town of Carrot River is also looking to replace infrastructure assets in other areas. Trew mentioned the town will begin another resurfacing project later in the summer and notifications are being sent to residents who will be affected.
