Man involved in police pursuit on Waterhen F.N. sentenced to two years

One of two men involved in a police pursuit on the Waterhen First Nation was sentenced to two years less a day by joint submission.

Stuart Alphonse Lasas was convicted on four charges in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on July 11. The charges include assault with a weapon, robbery, resisting arrest and vehicle theft.

He sentence included a 12 month probation order and a ten year firearm ban. Lasas is allowed to carry a firearm to hunt for food or if he has permission from the Chief Firearm Officer.

Charges stem from an incident on June 16 where RCMP were searching the Waterhen First Nation for suspects believed to be involved in a home invasion. Officers attempted to pull over the suspects in their vehicle but the suspects reversed into an officer’s vehicle, set off the airbags and disabled it, and drove away.

The officers got out and attempted to arrest the suspects when one officer shot their carbine after perceiving a threat from the vehicle, according to police.

The suspects were caught after reports of a similar vehicle hitting a home in the community.

Stuart and Dylan Basil Lasas were caught by police after attempting to flee. Dylan is facing two extra charges for injuring a police service dog and has a court date set for Aug. 19.
