Two M.L. minor baseball teams win hometown tournament

Both Meadow Lake Provincial Sox teams are heading into provincials with strong hometown tournament wins.

The 11U Sox faced the Prince Albert Royals for their first game in the tournament on July 12 and won 7-4. The 13U team had a strong start beating the Maidstone Lakers 16-2.

The 11U team then won back-to-back games against the Maidstone Lakers on Saturday and were able to move on to the finals.

The 13U Sox beat the Eston Ramblers and then faced their rivals the Unity Cardinals. The Sox were able to get another dominant victory of 7-0 against the Cardinals and made it to the finals.

Both teams ended the weekend with big wins. The 11U Sox won against Prince Albert Royals and 13U beat the Battleford Beavers to become tournament champions.

Regan Beck, coach for the 13U team, said the tournament went just as planned and the weather co-operated for the weekend.

“It went perfectly from a host perspective,” Beck said. “Both home teams ended up winning their championships which was a very nice bonus but I think every team that came had a good time and had some very competitive baseball.”

The 11U team is in Kindersley for the weekend of July 19 to 21 for their provincial tournament while the 13U Sox will be hosting their provincials in Meadow Lake the following weekend on July 26 to 28.

Beck said he appreciates the support from the people who came to watch the teams play and hopes to see more people come out to watch the 13U team during provincials. Beck said even though they won this tournament anything can happen during the provincials.

“I think we’re a strong team and we play pretty good baseball but there will be other strong teams here and this is 11, 12 and 13-year-old boys we’re dealing with here so there’s no guarantee on anything,” Beck said. “But I think if we play to the best of our abilities we have a shot.”
