Walk for missing women Ashley Morin, Tiki Laverdiere returns home

Jul 15, 2019 | 11:56 AM

After three days of walking from Saskatoon to North Battleford to raise awareness about missing woman Ashley Morin her family and supporters returned home late Sunday night.

The family of missing woman Tiki Laverdiere also walked alongside Morin’s family as a sign of solidarity, with the two mothers often walking side by side.

Morin family friend and spokesperson Krista Fox tried to hold back tears as she spoke to a large group of supporters in the parking lot outside the Gold Eagle Casino when they arrived home.

“Three long, hard really tough days,” she said. “But we did it. We brought out more awareness. We brought our beautiful girl’s face out there more.”

She said more people joined the walk along the way.

“Not only did we bring awareness but we became closer,” Fox said.

She thanked everyone who took part and helped the group finish the journey. On Saturday, the group of about 30 stayed overnight and camped on some vacant lots offered by a resident at Maymont. The woman made them a barbecue dinner and her neighbours donated food for a meal. Another woman donated the use of her camper for the walk.

“On our final day we really, really had to push ourselves… We got lots of blisters… bumps and bruises, but we knew today we were going to make it home,” Fox said. “That’s why we pushed so hard.”

“You guys pushed us,” Fox said to the other walkers. “How can we give up when we have 10, 12, 15 people behind us? We can’t give up. That’s thanks to you guys.”

Fox thanked those who contributed to a prior auction to increase the reward to find Morin, now up to $15,000.

Morin’s sister Janine appearing emotional and said she hopes the walk helped more people know Ashley is still missing.

“It’s to bring awareness that no matter what we are never going to give up and find my sister, and all the other missing and murdered women,” she said.

Friday, the RCMP said human remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford. Fox said the families were notified before the information was released to the public. An autopsy is set for this week to identify the remains.

Fox said she doesn’t know what to think.

“We have two missing girls here,” said Fox sobbing as she spoke to battlefordsNOW. “I don’t know. Part of you wants it to be them because then you can start healing. But the other part, it just means it’s so final…I pray and pray and pray. I don’t know.”
