Storm season in Saskatchewan could break as early as next week

The stormy season may be making an exit from Saskatchewan as early as next week with warmer summer temperatures right on its heels.

Looking at the average precipitation for this year, the time between January and the middle of June were well below average leading to a fairly dry spring.

“You can see that a few spots in Saskatchewan and southern Alberta have been extremely dry” Environment Canada Meteorologist Natalie Hasell said.

On June 19, the dry weather broke and it rained 11.8 mm to kick off the latest wet weather.

The last 11 days of June saw 52.2 mm of precipitation fall. That brought the monthly total up to 66.2 mm, slightly higher than the expected average for the month.

The wet weather has continued into July where 13.6 mm of precipitation has already fallen.

The rain and thunderstorms are projected to continue for the remainder the week but may break as early as Sunday. Following that we should see a return to regular summer temperatures for this time of year.

Sunday is forecasted to have a high of 25, and 28 C for Monday. The Government of Canada’s weather forecast for that following week of July 22 to the 26 show daytime highs in the mid to high 20s.

“You can see that the daytime temperatures are starting to increase by this weekend and then they are starting to get a little bit warmer. So, maybe the forecasted 25 degrees for Monday could be reasonable,” Hasell said.

Those around the Battlefords will have to hang on for a few more days but it looks like some nice summer weather is right around the corner.

“Being summer in the Prairies it is really hard to go four days without showers. I’m not going to promise a long stretch without showers but it looks like it should be a bit of a break,” she added.
