Hot dog eating champion crowned in North Battleford

Jul 18, 2019 | 12:51 PM

Ken Kwan had to mustard up his courage to compete in the Gold Eagle Casino’s first ever Hot Dog Eating Championship and now he gets to relish in the glory.

National Hot Dog Day was July 17, and to celebrate, the Gold Eagle Casino brought a little piece of Coney Island to the Battlefords.

Spectators filled the parking lot at the casino to watch as a full lineup of competitive eaters who had five minutes to put down as many dogs and buns as they could.

Prizes were awarded for the top three finishers. First place received $500, second place received $300, and third place received $200.

Ken Kwan was crowned the winner after downing five hot dogs. He claimed he did not have any secret method that he employed to win the event; he is just a guy that likes to eat fast.

However, he did reveal he trained for the event over the past two weeks.

“[I am] chewing a pack of gum at a time to strengthen my jaw, increasing my water level to stretch out my stomach, boosting my metabolism by doing more cardio exercises and watching what I’ve been eating,” he said. “I eat lots of appetite stimulating foods and 16 meals a day of small, small portions.”

This was not Kwan’s first rodeo. He said he is the two-time back-to-back Saskatoon Food Truck Wars champion, too.

Ken saw the advertisements for Gold Eagle Casino Hot Dog Eating Championship and knew he could not pass up an opportunity to add another trophy to his collection.

“Honestly, this belt is worth more than $500 to me because it is going to look amazing next to the rest of my trophies.”
