Water main construction in Humboldt underway for weeks

An infrastructure project in the City of Humboldt is expected to create detours for drivers over the next few weeks.

Water main replacement on Seventh Street in Humboldt – from Fifth to Eighth Ave. (Highway 5/Glenn Hall Dr.) – began on Friday, July 19. The work is expected to take approximately six to eight weeks for completion, according to the city’s Public Works and Utilities Director Peter Bergquist.

“It’s a little over 100 years old,” Bergquist told northeastNOW. “There will be older services replaced to the residents and businesses in the area and also a few other pipes.”

Sections of Seventh Street that are being worked on will be blocked off to the public, although there’s also signage to alert residents and travellers.

“Fortunately, Seventh Street isn’t a main corridor through the city,” Bergquist said. “Main Street, Sixth Street, and other locations are quite accessible and available for residents to use. We do ask the residents and public respect the traffic control devices in place for theirs and the workers’ safety.

“We know it can be an inconvenience. However, we look forward to the future of having good infrastructure in place so we can minimize disruptions to businesses and residences.”

Bergquist said there are also various types of concrete replacements occurring throughout the city and there will be paving projects starting later in the summer, including micro surfacing in the downtown area.

Official project starting dates will be determined once the contractors have narrowed down a timeline.
