Porcupine Plain hosting Roughrider Block Party on Saturday

A Saskatchewan Roughrider Block Party is coming to Porcupine Plain on Saturday, July 27 at the Porcupine Plain Sports Grounds.

The community was one of a few communities who were voted to host a Rider Block Party this season. Co-Chair of the event Amber Hoffus said the idea to apply came from their other co-chair attending last year’s party in Hudson Bay and thinking it was a great idea. Hoffus said through the voting process, they got votes from people who previously lived in Porcupine Plain 20, or even 40 years ago. Some votes were even coming from places like the Cayman Islands and New York

“It just goes to show no matter how far away you are, Porcupine is always a part of you,” she said.

Festivities get underway at 3 p.m. and will feature live entertainment, beer gardens, a concession, a ‘Fun Zone’, alumni appearances, Gainer, and of course, the Roughrider game as they take on the B.C. Lions. There will also be a guaranteed $1,500 50/50 at the event.

Money raised at the event will be split between two different projects. The first will be to help fix up their local pool. It was unable to be opened this year due to some structural issues, as well as some problems with water pipes.

“The other part will go to a new toddler playground in town,” Hoffus said. “Our town is really lucky to have great parks for kind of older kids, but nothing that’s super appropriate for 18 month to five-year-olds.”

She added with a good showing on Saturday, they should be able to be completely fundraised for the playground.

Hoffus also talked about what an event like this brings to Porcupine Plain saying that it gives them a chance to highlight the community.

“It gives people a chance maybe to check out Porcupine that maybe have never made the trip here before or always just weren’t sure about it,” she said. “Give them a chance to see what our town can do.”

She encouraged people to show up early to be able to get the full experience of the activities that will be taking place. If weather does get nasty, Hoffus said they still plan to be outside, and they do have a quonset for some shelter.
