International Street Fest kicks off in North Battleford

With the sweet lemonade sun shining through blue skies and the sound of children’s giggles filling the air, there couldn’t have been a more perfect day to unbox this year’s North Battleford International Street Performer Festival.

Mayor Ryan Bater and Battleford Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie joined the festival’s organizing committee co-chairs Alexis Christensen and Kali Weber to officially launch the sixth annual festival Friday in the city’s downtown.

Christensen invited residents to come and take in the fun all day Friday and Saturday.

“The main idea is to bring the community together, all walks of life,” she said. “Everyone is welcome; it’s free and it’s a safe space.”

Christensen expected the street to be filled with festival goers Friday night for the popular attraction that includes performances by a variety of acts, as well as assorted vendor and foods booths.

New this year is a special children’s festival taking place at Library Park.

“It’s literally a mini-fest in the fest,” Christensen said. “There is programming happening there both days.”

The Kids’ Fest schedule is posted on the street festival’s Facebook page.

Christensen said there are 29 performers in this year’s festival.

“Our first year we had 11, so we’ve grown exponentially,” she said. “The fact that we’ve had someone local producing the festival is just amazing.”

Christensen said having Weber produce the street festival again this year has been a boost to the show.

Mayor Bater beamed during the opening celebration, pleased to see the event getting underway.

“It’s hard to believe; it gets bigger and stronger every year,” he said. “It’s become a highlight of the summer here in the Battlefords. And, definitely a highlight for the whole year here in downtown North Battleford.”

He said the festival has been part of the revitalization of downtown and is a boon to tourism for the Battlefords.

“It brings people from throughout the region. [It is] a great opportunity to visit the city and to check out everything there is to do here in North Battleford,” he said. “I’m very happy the volunteer board put in so much work. It has been received so well. Every time I come there’s more vendors, more food, and more entertainment.”

The street festival takes place along 101 Street and runs until 9 p.m. on Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday.
