Meadow Lake 13U Sox win provincials

The Meadow Lake Under-13 Sox ended their season as provincial champions.

Meadow Lake hosted the 2019 13U AA Tier 2 Provincial Champions this weekend and took home the championship with a dominant 14-6 victory over the Assinaboia Aces in the finals.

Meadow Lake and Assinaboia played each other in the first round of the tournament on Friday and then met again in the finals. Head Coach Regan Beck said the team was able to play well because they were familiar with Assinaboia.

“We played them once before this weekend and we knew coming in they would be strong,” Beck said. “We saw the same starting pitcher and we knew he threw a lot of curveballs and that gave us a little bit of an idea of what we were going to face. We knew it was going to be a strong team and it was going to be a tough game. They didn’t disappoint that way and they battled right until the end.”

Beck said this is the first time a Meadow Lake minor baseball team has won a championship in the peewee division.

The tournament playoffs were pushed into Sunday afternoon because of the previous night’s rain. Beck and volunteers worked all morning to get the diamonds ready for the semi-final games that day.

“I woke up four o’clock yesterday morning with the rain and wind pounding on my window and I was thinking ‘Oh boy are we in trouble,’” Beck said. “Then I went to the diamond at 6 a.m. and then back to the diamond at 8 a.m. We worked until, personally I was there until noon, but the rest of the grounds crew were there until 1 p.m. getting the diamond ready.”

While the season is over, Beck is looking forward to next year. He said half the team will move on to the 15U bantam team and the other half will be back for another year.
