Motorists are advised to find an alternate route as water and sewer mains on Fifth Street W. are replaced and a section of the street will be closed.

Acting City Manager Jessica Walters said prep work for the project begins this week and workers will start excavation after the long weekend.

The main replacement work will start south on Seventh Avenue W. and will continue north to Fifth Avenue W. The sewer main is live during replacement and work will be done in sections from manhole to manhole.

Residents in Ducluzeau Place and the 600 block of Fifth Street W. are asked not to use large amounts of water during work hours. A temporary water line running from a hydrant on Seventh Avenue W. will service the buildings in the area.

Sidewalks will be accessible for residents however, pedestrians should avoid using the sidewalk while construction is ongoing.

Once the mains are replaced, the street will be repaved and the project is expected to be done before the school year starts in September.
