Jul 29, 2019 | 11:22 AM

The skies above La Ronge were bright Saturday night as Environment and Climate Change Canada recorded more than 450 lightning strikes in the area.

That’s according to Meteorologist Terri Lang, who stated the storm went through between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. She noted the thunderstorm also brought with it 19 millimeters of rain between 11 p.m. and midnight for a total of 21 millimeters by the time it passed by. The strongest gust of wind recorded at the La Ronge Airport was 53 km/h, but Lang expects there were likely more intense winds south of there.

“This is very typical for this time of year,” Lang said. “We’ve had an active year for thunderstorms and certainly this is the time of year they do come through.”

Lang added Environment and Climate Change Canada also received a report from Missinipe of strong winds, heavy rain, lightning and thunder meaning the storm system must have been widespread.

In La Ronge, there was light damage by the wind as several tree are down in Patterson Park. It’s unknown whether or not more trees will need to be cut down due to public safety measures.
