MN-S mourns passing of northern educator

Leadership with Metis Nation – Saskatchewan are extending their heartfelt prayers to the family and friends of La Ronge’s Ray Smith, who recently passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.

“A family lost their husband, grandfather, father, brother and nephew, while Métis Nation – Saskatchewan lost a leader, role model and educator” President Glen McCallum said. “On behalf of MN-S, we extend our heartfelt prayers to Ray’s family, friends and community.”

McCallum also stated in a news release he had the opportunity of knowing Smith his entire life and, from his own experience, Smith’s passing is a loss on many levels. He said Smith was part of the fabric of the North and he dedicated his life to ensuring northern youth had access to quality education.

Minister of Education for MN-S Earl Cook stated Smith’s impact will last through the many people and students touched by his work.

“The hole left by Mr. Smith’s passing will be felt by many, however, we take comfort in his legacy for a strong, educated North and the memories he created with so many,” Cook said.

During an interview with larongeNOW in June, Smith spoke about his decades-long career as an educator and how he worked endlessly to teach Cree to aspiring teachers at the Northern Teachers Education Program. He retired from Northlands College earlier this spring.

A funeral service for Smith will be held Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. at the All Saints Anglican Church in La Ronge.
