Nipawin declines campground application, opportunity still open to discuss

A discretionary use proposal for a campground within the Town of Nipawin was declined.

Nipawin council decided during their meeting on Aug. 12 to not move forward with an application to create a campground on a piece of commercial property on Eighth St. W. near the south side of town.

Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s chief administrative officer, said campground applications within the town aren’t unique.

“Nipawin is very fortunate in that we’re so close to those types of geographic features that are desired by campground operators,” Elliott said. “We’ve had another application recently that council also did not approve; different location and concerns entirely. It’s not unique, but each individual application is considered on its own merits and circumstances, and council approaches it that way.”

While Elliott couldn’t comment on why the councillors voted against the campground, he said they have a collective concern of ensuring the town flows well and looks appealing to visitors.

The applicant has been informed of council’s decision and continuing conversations with the Town of Nipawin’s staff to amend the proposal is still on the table.

“There remains opportunity for the applicant to modify the proposal a bit in consultation with our planner, and then it can be put back in front of council for a future date,” Elliott said.
