Ice Wolves Summer Hockey School proves to be a hit
The La Ronge Ice Wolves Summer Hockey School proved to be so much of a success this year there were no spots left to register when it began Monday.
That’s according to Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski, who is leading the training camp until Thursday with Associate Head Coach Gaelan Patterson and Strength and Conditioning Coach Travis Hegland. The four-day event is taking place at La Ronge’s Mel Hegland Uniplex and Kaminski stated the 90 participants are getting nearly three hours of on-ice time each day.
“We got some kids who have been only a few times on their skates and they have had big improvements in only a couple days,” Kaminski said. “In the older group, there’s some skills and a very good work ethic too. It’s awesome to see that and we just want to make sure when they go into their teams, they are prepared a little better.”
While the participants are on the ice, the coaches teach them hockey fundamentals like edge work, power skating, crossovers, C-cuts, mohawks, pivots, passing, shooting and puck protection. About half of their time is spent in dry land sessions which includes activities such as dynamic stretches, plyometrics, fitness testing and games.
